What Makes a Story Impossible to Put Down?

Yesterday, I read a story that was supposed to be “just one chapter.”

Well… I kept reading. 😂

That got me thinking: what actually makes a story so good that you don’t want to put it down?

For me, it’s a few things:

1. A strong opening
The first few pages need to make you curious. Give me a reason to ask, “Okay, but what happens next?”

2. Characters you care about
It doesn’t have to be a perfect character. Sometimes, the flawed ones are the most interesting because you want to see how their story unfolds.

3. A little tension
Something needs to be at stake. A secret, a problem, a difficult decision, a relationship, or a mystery.

4. Unexpected twists
When you think you’ve figured everything out and the story takes you somewhere else? That’s when I’m fully invested.

5. The need to know what happens next
This might be the biggest one. A good story keeps creating questions in your mind—and you keep reading because you need the answers.

Now I want to know from you:

What makes YOU unable to put a story down?

Is it the characters, romance, suspense, plot twists, humour, or something else?
